What is Organic Rank?

Organic Search Rank

The position a product holds in Amazon's unpaid search results for a specific search term in a specific marketplace.

The Formula

Rank ≈ Performance × Relevancy

Organic rank is where your product sits in Amazon's unpaid search results for one search term, in one marketplace, at one moment. It is the result a shopper sees with no sponsored label attached to it.

Rank belongs to the keyword, not the product

A product does not have a rank. It has a separate rank for every term a shopper might type, and those ranks move independently of each other. Authority on a root term tends to pull its long tail up with it, while winning one long tail phrase rarely works in the other direction. That is why our house view is to attack roots first rather than to collect long tail terms.

What earns it

The working model is multiplicative rather than additive:

Rank ≈ Performance × Relevancy

Relevancy comes first in a practical sense. If your listing is not indexed for a term at all, it cannot rank for that term whatever the sales history. Beyond that threshold, relevancy is how well Amazon reads your title, bullets, backend terms and category as an answer to the query. Performance is the sales and conversion history the term has produced for your ASIN.

Because the two multiply, strong performance on a weakly relevant term still loses to moderate performance on a precise match. Adding a keyword to your listing raises one factor only, and does nothing on its own until sales follow.

Advertising does not buy rank. It buys the audition. Sales velocity and conversion rate are what the algorithm rewards, and ads are the mechanism that puts a listing in front of enough shoppers for that signal to exist at all.

Reading rank data honestly

A rank reading is a snapshot from one crawl. Results vary by device, delivery postcode and shopper history, so a single number is noisy and the trend is the signal. Listing edits usually take a couple of days to show up in rank, so judge a change against a window rather than against the next morning. Track daily at minimum, and hourly during an active ranking push.

How Shurq treats rank

The bidding engine folds an organic rank zone into the bid as a multiplier, matched on exact keyword text only. Where no rank data exists for a term, the zone is treated as new and neutral, so a missing measurement never moves a bid by itself.

Examples

  • A listing ranking third for 'stainless steel water bottle' and thirtieth for 'gym flask'
  • Rank slipping for two weeks after a stockout, despite ad spend returning to its old level
