Use average order value if buyers often order more than one unit.

Orders divided by clicks, from your ads reports for the keyword, target or campaign.

The Max CPC Formula

On average, one click is worth your price times your conversion rate in sales. Your target ACoS is the share of a sale you are willing to spend on advertising, so the most a click can cost is that share of what the click is worth.

Max CPC = Price × Conversion rate × Target ACoS

Worked Example

Example inputs, not real data: sale price $25.00, conversion rate 10%, target ACoS 30%.

  1. Max CPC = $25.00 × 10% × 30% = $0.75
  2. At a 10% conversion rate, an order takes 10 clicks on average
  3. Check: 10 clicks × $0.75 = $7.50 of ad cost per order, which is 30% of $25.00

How to Use the Result

  • Treat it as a ceiling on what you pay, not the bid you type. Placement adjustments and the dynamic bids up and down strategy can raise the bid Amazon uses above your base bid, so leave room for them when you set the base bid.
  • Compare it with your actual CPC. If you are paying more per click than your max, lower the bid, improve the listing's conversion rate, or stop bidding on that term. If you are paying less, you have room to bid up for more traffic, if volume is what you want.
  • Work it out per keyword or target. Conversion rates differ from one search term to the next, so one account-wide max CPC overpays for some terms and underbids others. Rates built on few clicks are noisy, so wait for enough data.
  • Start from your own target ACoS. Your break-even ACoS equals your profit margin before ad spend. Subtract the margin you want to keep and you have your target: the break-even ACoS calculator does both steps.
  • Keep bids in line as data changes. Prices, conversion rates and costs move, so max CPC moves too. The Amazon bid optimization guide covers the full process, and the Shurq AI Ad Manager automates it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate max CPC on Amazon?
Multiply your sale price by your conversion rate and by your target ACoS. Example: a $25.00 product that converts 10% of clicks, with a 30% target ACoS, gives a max CPC of $0.75.
Is max CPC the same as my bid?
Not exactly. Max CPC is the average cost per click you can afford at your target ACoS. Placement adjustments and the dynamic bids up and down strategy can raise the bid Amazon uses above your base bid, so set the base bid with that headroom in mind.
What conversion rate should I use?
Use the conversion rate (orders divided by clicks) of the keyword, target or campaign you are bidding on, from your advertising reports, over a period with enough clicks to be meaningful. A rate built on only a handful of clicks can swing widely.
What if I don't know my target ACoS?
Start from your break-even ACoS, which equals your profit margin before ad spend, and subtract the margin you want to keep on each ad-attributed sale. The free break-even ACoS calculator does both steps.
Should I use the price or the average order value?
Use average order value if buyers often order more than one unit, or several of your products together. Max CPC scales with whatever one order is worth to you.
