A keyword match type that serves when the query contains your words in order, with extra words allowed before or after.
Phrase match sits between exact and broad. Your ad is eligible when the shopper's query contains the keyword's words in the same sequence, with words permitted before or after it. Close variants such as plurals and misspellings are included, but the order of the words is the rule that defines the match type.
The ordering rule
Take the keyword water bottle.

That single rule is what gives phrase match its value. It captures a family of related intents built on the same root, while refusing the unrelated recombinations that broad match will accept.
The rule describes intent, not a guarantee
Amazon has been widening how loosely it reads a phrase keyword, and in Sponsored Brands phrase matching now works from the keyword's implied meaning rather than from the literal sequence alone. So treat the ordering rule as what the match type is for, and the search term report as what actually happened. If you have not checked which queries a phrase keyword served on this month, you do not know what it is buying.
What phrase match is for
Phrase is a research rung, not a destination. A phrase keyword should be read as a container: the keyword line tells you the family is working, and the search term report tells you which member of the family did the work. Because its clicks come from several distinct queries, RPC at phrase level is an average across intents and should not be treated as one keyword's economics.
Worked example
Suppose a phrase keyword collects thirty distinct queries over a month and three of them account for most of the orders. Those three graduate to exact match, where they can hold their own bid, their own rank tracking and their own target. The phrase keyword itself keeps running.
A common mistake is to negate a harvested term from its source campaign by reflex. The source often keeps winning cheaper clicks, dual presence widens coverage on the results page, and the continuing data still informs bid decisions. Negate on harvest only when budget is genuinely constrained.
Bidding at phrase
Phrase keywords carry more intent variance than exact ones, so they deserve more patience before a spending target is judged, and normally a lower bid than the exact version of the same root. In Shurq's bid engine that patience is money rather than clicks: the budget a non-converting target may spend before its bid starts decaying is weighted by match type, with phrase at 1.25 against exact at 1.0. Where no cost of goods is on file, the engine falls back to a click ladder instead, and phrase waits fifteen clicks against exact's ten.
