Amazon Spain PPC Guide

Amazon Spain sells in Spanish and prices in euros on amazon.es. Learn how keyword research, tax and fulfilment choices change the way you advertise there.

Marketplace: amazon.es | Currency: EUR

Marketplace Overview

Amazon Spain (amazon.es) trades in euros, and the storefront, the customer service and above all the search box run in Spanish. It sits inside the same unified European seller account as the other EU stores, so Spain is usually added to an existing business rather than set up as a separate one. That convenience hides the real work, because almost everything that decides whether advertising pays in Spain sits upstream of the bid.

Spain also carries demand from countries that have no Amazon store of their own. Amazon's European Export Programme exports from a small group of European stores, Spain among them, and reaches destinations with no store of their own, Portugal included. So once you have export enabled, a Spanish listing can be bought by shoppers who are not in Spain. The listing, the keywords and the ads stay Spanish, while delivery expectations and returns behaviour may not match the domestic customer.

The advertising mechanics themselves are the ones you already know. Bids enter the same auction, placement modifiers multiply the keyword bid instead of replacing it, and any hourly rule you add compounds with those modifiers. What changes in Spain is the input side: the words shoppers actually type, the tax treatment sitting inside your displayed price, where the stock is held, and which days the country is not shopping. Treat those four as the project, because copying an English account's structure across does not carry any of them.

PPC Advertising Tips for Amazon Spain

1

Write in Castilian rather than translating

Spanish written for Spain differs from Latin American Spanish in ordinary product words: ordenador rather than computadora, mรณvil rather than celular, coche rather than carro, zumo rather than jugo. Amazon runs a separate Mexican store, so copy prepared for that audience is the wrong source for amazon.es. Have the listing written by someone who shops in Spain, then harvest your keyword list out of that copy instead of out of a translated one.

2

Build the keyword list around Spanish grammar

Spanish puts the descriptor after the noun, so a word for word rendering of an English phrase produces a string nobody types. Gender and number split terms further, and accents split them again, since shoppers type both the accented and the unaccented form. Treat each variant as its own search string and let the search term report show which ones earn clicks, rather than assuming one form covers the family. Keep the English loanwords Spaniards genuinely use in daily speech, because an all Spanish list quietly loses those queries.

3

Plan against the Spanish holiday calendar

Gift demand in Spain does not stop on 25 December, because Reyes on 6 January is a traditional gift giving day. Early December carries public holidays on the 6th and the 8th, and August is traditionally the main holiday month. On top of that, each autonomous community and many municipalities set holidays of their own, so a quiet day can be regional rather than national. Compare like day with like day before reading a dip as a campaign fault and cutting bids.

4

Derive the hourly curve from Spain, not from an English market

Mainland Spain keeps central European time while the Canary Islands run an hour behind, and daily routines in Spain typically run later than in northern Europe. Anchor any dayparting schedule to the marketplace timezone and build the curve from Spain's own hourly revenue per click, never by transplanting a UK or German schedule. Remember that a day rule, an hour rule and a placement modifier all multiply together, so a set of modest looking adjustments can leave you bidding far above the number you intended.

5

Settle tax and fulfilment before scaling spend

Prices on amazon.es are shown inclusive of IVA, the Spanish VAT, so build advertising targets on the net amount you keep rather than the shelf price. Holding stock inside Spain generally creates a Spanish VAT registration obligation, while serving Spain from stock held in another EU country avoids that and adds a cross border fulfilment cost to every unit instead. The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla sit outside the EU VAT area and are treated differently again. Confirm your own position with a tax adviser before committing budget.

6

Run Spain as its own market, not as a German copy

Keep separate campaigns, separate negatives and separate hourly rules for Spain, even though the stores share one European seller account. A term that converts in Germany or the UK tells you nothing about the Spanish auction, because the query itself is a different string and the shoppers behind it can include export customers reaching you through the Spanish store. Start with the roots in Spanish, prove them in the search term report, and only then decide where the long tail is worth harvesting.

Challenges

  • -Everything customer facing has to exist in Spanish written for Spain, not translated from English or reused from Latin American copy
  • -IVA sits inside the displayed price, and storing stock in Spain generally brings a Spanish VAT registration obligation
  • -The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla sit outside the EU VAT area, so one country is not one tax position
  • -Public holidays vary by autonomous community, so demand dips are regional and easy to misread as advertising problems
  • -Serving Spain from inventory held in another EU country adds a cross border fulfilment cost to every unit

Opportunities

  • +Listings genuinely written in Spanish surface search terms that a translated listing never produces
  • +Spain is one of the stores Amazon's European Export Programme sells from, so with export enabled a Spanish listing also reaches customers in countries that have no Amazon store of their own, Portugal among them
  • +Spain sits in the unified European seller account, so adding it is a listing, tax and fulfilment exercise rather than a new business
  • +Reyes on 6 January extends the gifting season past December, which gives the peak a second stage to plan for
  • +Hourly and placement optimisation can be tuned to Spanish shopping hours instead of inherited from an English speaking market
